INDIVDUALIZING YOUR SELF DEFENSE PROGRAM

I get many new faces coming into my self defense training centre who have had years of martial arts training behind them but want to learn something tactical that they can use on the streets. When it comes to dealing with people who have had years of martial arts training behind them they tend to have their style ingrained into their muscle memory. They move or turn with certain stances that they're style has ingrained in them. If you are one of these people and are taking up a self defense system don't try forgetting or ignoring those things that are ingrained into your muscle memory because the harder you try not to do something the more you will end up doing it. Instead incorporate the style into the new self defense system you are learning. This in turn will cut down on frustration and also is a more realistic form of training because you cannot erase years of training with a couple of months of training in a new system and expect to remember it especially when adrenaline takes over your body and your subconscious kicks in.
