CHANGING OF THE GUARD IN SELF DEFENSE

With most of my students and readers being already involved in the mixed martial arts they have with them some ideas on how to protect themselves in an all out violent altercation. But when they walk into my training centre that is set up as an apartment and back alley setting they quickly realize what they have learned in mixed martial arts class does not help protect themselves in a self defense situation because there tactics must be changed or altertered to be effective in a real life situation.

Lets take for an example being in the guard postion, in a mixed martial arts class you lay on a mated floor with a partner and do your thing. Now try being in the guard while laying on your couch or in a confined room what happens? You can move or do half the things that you normally could do from being on the ground in a wide open room. So practice the guard when lying on your couch or being in a furnished room and you will see to be effective you have to change things up.
